Ozzie Guillen: Asian treated better than Latinos in Baseball
CHICAGO – White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen thinks Asian players are given privileges U.S. Latinos that are not available.
In his latest diatribe, the outspoken Guillen also said he is "alone" in education Young baseball players from Latin America to stay away from performance-enhancing drugs and the Major League Baseball does not care about that.
He said MLB does not care how often he argued with the referees and what he told the media.
Guillen said it was unfair that Japanese players are assigned translators when they come to the United States to play pro ball, but Latinos are not.
"Very bad. I say, why do we have Japanese interpreters and we do not have Spanish. I always say that. Why did they not get this privilege? "Guillen said Sunday before Chicago played the Oakland Athletics. "Do not take this wrong, but they take us. We bring a Japanese player and they are very good and they bring all these privileges to them. We give a kid Dominican … go to the minor leagues, good luck. Good luck. And it will always be like that. It does will never change. But that's the way it is. "
Guillen, who is from Venezuela, said when he went to his son, Oney, in Class A, the team had a translator for a Korean perspective that has "made more money than the players."
"And we Latinos were 17 and you know who was the interpreter? Oney. Why? Because we have Latino Coaches? For here it is? Why? I have no answer "Said Guillen." We are in the United States, we do not provide any coaches who speak Spanish with people. You choose to come to this country and you better speak English.
"It's just not the White Sox, the baseball," he added. "We have a pitching coach who is Latino, but the pitching coach can not talk about hitting a guy and Latino is the way it is and we have to overcome those (obstacles). You know why? Because we are hungry, we grow the right way, we come here to compete. "
Guillen said of the young prospects in Latin America are influenced to use performance-enhancing drugs.
"It someone behind the scenes of the money out of these children and tell them to take something they are not supposed to, "said Guillen. "If you tell me, you take this … you will be Vladimir Guerrero, Miguel Cabrera you'll be, you'll be that guy … I'll do it. Because I have seven brothers sleeping in the same room. I have to take care of my mother, my father. … What I'm going to make money for them better. "
Guillen said he tries to educate Latin American players on steroids and other drugs prohibited.
"I am the one to teach Latinos about not using," he said. " I am the only Major League Baseball and is not (care). All they care about – how many times I talk to the referees, I say to the media. But I'm the only one in baseball to come to the Latino children and say not to use it and I do not understand any credit for that.
"They look at you and say,` It Ozzie's good for you, "he said." Ozzie told her, do not worry. If someone else has said they would play that (stuff) each day on the Jumbotron. … I am the only one who came up with this idea. I did for Latino children. … I want to help these children. "
Major League Baseball spokesman Rich Levin disagreed with the assertion of Guillen.
"We spend more time and effort to educate our players on how to use Latin developing countries that we our domestic players in the United States. We test extensively in the Dominican Republic and Venezuela leagues, and we have increased the testing of every years, "said Levin told The Associated Press." We also have Sandy Alderson in the Dominican Republic, on a full-time and it deals with many of these issues as well. "
Guillen also said Latin American players are considered too old to sign if they increased from 16 to 17, but the outlook for the American university are often signed at the age of 22 or 23.
